Decisive step forward in promoting decarbonization of EU Transport – the Advanced Biofuels coalition LSB welcomes final agreement on RED2
Today the EU Council of Ministers adopted the EU’s entirely revamped Renewable Energy Directive. The Directive sets a minimum blending mandate for advanced biofuels starting in 2022.
Both European Parliament and Member States underline with this new Directive that advanced biofuels have a substantial role to play in achieving the 14% renewable energy use in transport by 2030. The law contains a mandate to use advanced biofuels with milestones of at least 0.2% in 2022, 1% in 2025 and 3.5% in 2030.
This step is very much welcomed after years of regulatory uncertainty. LSB urges swift implementation and transposition of the Directive and calls upon the Commission to ensure to the maximum extent transparency and consistency in this process.
This Directive along with national measures are needed to contribute towards the rapid and deep reductions in transport emissions. In 2017 EU transport greenhouse emissions were up 28% compared to 1990 levels according to the European Environment Agency. And recently both IEA and the IPPC called for tougher action in reducing transport emissions.
LSB would like to thank representatives of the European Commission, the European Parliament and the Member States of the European Union for their collaborative efforts on RED2, and for their commitment to reducing transport emissions with sustainable advanced biofuels. The industry believes that RED2 is a much-needed incentive to further roll-out the advanced biofuels industry in the EU.
